Arthritis deconstructed

Imagine yourself in a castle, happy, relaxed & enjoying the luxuries of the castle. Suddenly, there is an earthquake & the pillars that are holding together the castle, get completely shaken up & cracked. The comfort & the beauty of your castle would surely reduce with those cracks on the pillars. The impressions of the attack definitely need good repair to restore the solidity of the whole building. Well, something like this happens in our body, when the pillars of support, our bones get inflamed or infected & the comfort of us being in our castle, our body is greatly diminished. This state of the bones is called as “Arthritis”. “Arth”, the Greek part, meaning “Joint” & “tis” meaning inflamed or infected. Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. Before we proceed further let us understand this disorder systematically, so to decipher the treatment as well. Joint is basically the point where two different bones meet. So the movement of two bones is co-ordinated at the joint to cause a successful motion. This space between the two bones, called a joint & sometimes due to some infection this space might get inflamed owing to an allergic reaction, an infection or an injury. Thus the motion becomes painful and difficult. . In a lot of cases the progression of arthritis is seen from the smaller joints like that of our finger or toes. This then gradually proceeds to the bigger joints of the body.

Depending upon the area of dysfunction & the reason behind it, there have been many different forms of Arthritis being stated & the number is still growing

The most common forms of the disorder are following:

-          Osteoarthritis – Due to the wear & tear of the cartilage in the Joint

-          Rheumatoid Arthritis – Due to inflammation of the joint, because of an overactive immune system.

-          Gout – Uric acid deposition in the joints

-          Ankylosing Spodylitis – Arthritis of the back. Results in pain & stiffness along the spine

Common Symptoms

-          Redness, swelling & pain in the joints

-          Weight loss

-          Fatigue

-          Severe pain in motion of specific joints

-          In many cases, sudden deformities of the joints can be seen

-          Joint stiffness

-          Tenderness of joints

-          Non-specific fever

-          Flu like symptoms

-          Early morning stiffness

Who is at risk?

-          Overweight individuals – excess weight can put a lot of stress & pressure on the body leading to pain in the joints.

-          Those who have either of the parents or both suffering from Arthritis.

-          Those with severe joint injuries post an accident should take special care before this progresses into an arthritis kind of a condition

-          Women have been observed to be more affected than men. The female hormones play a significant role in the manifestation of the symptoms of Arthritis.

With a superficial knowledge of how physiologically & anatomically the disorder proceeds & affects our body, we must also see some other perspective for Arthritis. Very different from the idea of the modern medicine, arthritis, is seen as an effect of the collection of toxins as per Ayurveda. These toxins called “ama” are the by-products of improper digestion that result in aggravation of vata, leading to pain & inflammation.
