Bhastrika
Meaning: bhastrika- bellows of a blacksmith
The respiratory pattern pattern matches the bellows
Procedure:
Sit in padmasana. Slowly and deeply inhale. After exhaling, do moolbandha and uddiyanabandha. Do inhalations and exhalations, which are vigorous and strong. At a stretch 10 to 12 cycles of recurrent inhalations and exhalations should be done. Then inhale through the right nostril, perform jandhara bandha. Stay in the same posture for 5 to 10 counts. Release the bandha, exhale from the left nostril
Benefit :
- Invigorate the liver, spleen, pancreas and abdominal muscles
- Sinuses are drained
Caution:
- Too long practice of bhastrika wears out the system as the breathing is forceful. Person with weak constitution and poor lung capacity should not attempt
- Those suffering with ear or eye problems shouldn’t do it
- Persons with high or low B.P. should avoid it
