Prenatal Yoga

The mere thought of a child blossoming inside your body is exhilarating, isn’t it?
Becoming a mother is the best part of a woman’s life, the moment pregnancy is confirmed, it brings out mixed emotions, excitement and anxiety together. Pregnancy doesn’t only involve physical changes, but huge emotional variations too and hence for a healthy baby to be borne, it’s very necessary to maintain a calm and pleasant mindset. Through the course of 9 months of pregnancy, the body witnesses immense changes and sometimes the most pleasant experience becomes a little painful. This needs a solution that keeps the body fit, the mind relaxed & the 9 months to be carefree & fun – prenatal Yoga.
Why Prenatal yoga?
The idea of prenatal yoga is to:
- Manage typical problems - during the pregnancy, the problems like nausea, thyroid, high Blood Pressure, edema, anxiety, restlessness, acidity, increased sugar etc can easily be managed through yoga practices and vyayama.
- Improve Spinal Health – as the stomach protrudes, the load is transferred to the spine & the lower backaches start from 5th month onwards. Throughout the pregnancy it is absolutely essential to maintain spinal health so that the normal routine of the mother doesn’t get disturbed & the body can flex enough to manage the excess weight.
- Ease the process of normal delivery – The asanas and the yoga practices are oriented to prepare a woman’s body for normal delivery which is very important for her health in future. Prenatal yoga postures help in strengthening the thigh muscles & flexing the vaginal muscles for an easy dilation.
- Samskaar (Impressions on Child) – Meditation on oneself in this state gives the first impressions to the child which will be with the kid for a lifetime. It includes chanting of certain special mantras that explain & elaborate philosophy of life & existence. This divine chanting not only nurtures the baby spiritually but also broadens the mother’s perspective on the beautiful process called pregnancy.
There are different practices in the three trimesters.
Yoga can also lessen the discomforts caused by pregnancy. There are poses for sciatic pain, round ligament pain, and yes, even morning sickness. In the first trimester women can do lot of exercises which gradually reduce month by month because of the changing anatomy & physiology of the body. In the last trimester a few simple practices, breathing exercises are done as the delivery date approaches.
