STRESS

As of now, the word stress has certainly become one of the most popularly used & to an extent a rather appropriate addition in everyday’s lingo.  Stress is often misinterpreted or misunderstood by many. Stress is only a common reaction of our body & is also an essential part of our existence. Stress makes us immune to pain, heightens memory response, improves our reflexes, but commonly with the spark of stress, there’s a simultaneous relaxation response within the body pretty much like a typical bollywood movie climax where the hero wants to save his woman & is able to become immune even to a bullet, is as watchful as a hawk & fights like a champ, saving his woman & then moves towards a happily ever after.

Unfortunately, the state of happiness after a bout of stress is now becoming rather difficult to achieve, with the result, body & life is at a “fight” mostly. A perpetual state of stress defeats body’s normal response of relaxation thereby rendering the body fatigued, tired & susceptible to varied disorders/ infections.

  • A survey amongst 30 companies revealed that atleast 50 per cent of the employees had stress in some form or other.
  • 20 %had depression and
  • 30 % had problems like alcoholism, marital discord, etc
  • STRESS is a leading contributor  to a variety of health problems, including coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, bacterial and viral infections, and depression.

LIFESTYLE DISORDERS

  • Hypertension has seen to affect 25-30% of urban population
  • Obesity: 65% of  Indians are suffering from overweight obesity and 39% are suffering from abdominal Obesity.
  • Diabetes: 20 million diabetics  in India, which is the highest ever reported number from anywhere in the world. The prevalence of diabetes varies between  6-8% in urban  In 2007, the country with the largest numbers of people with diabetes is India (40.9 million)
  • Insomnia: It is estimated that as much as 30 %  adult population suffers from insomnia

The worst part about stress is that it attacks one’s state of health from all directions -physically, emotionally, mentally & spiritually. Stress can exuberate & pronounce its presence in life in many forms without even one realizing that it is stress which is causing all this mess. So one needs to understand that a short lived state of happiness, perpetual heaviness in the body, some or the other problems in the body & quite obvious changes in one’s personality could be symptoms of stress & should be dealt with immediately before they accumulate within & cause some major lifestyle disorder.

The big question that how one person’s stress can affect an Organization?

  • An unhealthy individual is a LIABILITY to the entire setup/ team.
  • The lifestyle disorders have a very deep impact on the employee’s performance thus leading to LOW PRODUCTIVITY.
  • For example, someone suffering from a sleep disorder like insomnia will also be highly irritable, usually angry/ frustrated & will carry a very short attention span to work, collectively reducing his performance
  • A HAPPY EMPLOYEE is not just an ASSET for the organization, but also an inspiration for the rest of the team.
  • Work absenteeism could be stress related due to professional or personal reasons or some health issue that the employee must be facing.

SIGNIFICANCE OF ACTING NOW:

Employee is the organization’s human capital

  • Providing good work-life balance helps to retain  the employees for longer period.
  • A good work life balance makes the employee to stick with the organization for a longer time.
  • Healthy employees are more productive.
  • “Prevention is better than cure”, preventing the lifestyle disorders & promoting health will add value to an individual’s life & therefore to the organization at large as well.
  • Lifestyle disorders have characteristic symptoms, which the person starts displaying quite early, at this stage if the personality  shift can be identified then the issue can be curbed before it stretches beyond control
  • Early signs & symptoms – Lack of team spirit, frequent bouts of anger, physical fatigue, decreased motivation, an obvious feeling of being “lost” or “numb”, excessive smoking/ alcoholism .

Simple statistics clearly show that physical inactivity accounts for:

  • 22% of colon cancer,
  • 18% of osteoporotic fractures
  • 12% of diabetes & hypertension

SO at the time when it assures perfect physical practices, it also helps in relaxing the mind, making one calm, patient & energetic.

It is absolutely essential to learn stress management, discover your stressors & stress reactions. Stress management should happen in the present moment because the pace at which the competition is increasing, living healthy is not that simple anymore. One must turn towards simple easy to do steps to curb stress & learn ways to approach the issue holistically rather symptomatically.
